The Trecena of Aq’ab’al
(24th July – 5th August, 2026)

by Mark Elmy

Somewhere in the darkness, light begins to make its presence known. This is the beginning of beginnings, it is the first spark of the fire. The first spark needs tending, gentle use of breath and material in order to grow it into the fire it will become. The spark may represent a new idea that you have, but this is the first thought of this idea. It is something that comes in the waking moment, fresh from the dream world. It has started to emerge into this world, but is still uncertain, hidden and yet to take much form. This is the moment where it needs support and tending, just as the spark, or the newborn needs care and attention. This is where the input and encouragement of family, friends and community can help that spark to become the fire, or that newborn to grow.

1 – Akbal

The word aq’ab’al itself means “darkness.” But when they teach you about the day signs, they will tell you that Aq’ab’al actually symbolizes the dawn. It is the moment when darkness and light are equal. It is dusk and dawn, the “in between” times. We cannot come fully to the light until we have recognized and understood our own darkness. This is a time when we may easily “walk in between the worlds.” Click here to read full article.

Calakmul Mural Identified As Mythical Maya Hero Juun Ajaw

by Mark Milligan

In a groundbreaking discovery at the ancient city of Calakmul, archaeologists have identified what is believed to be the earliest known mural of the mythical Maya hero Juun Ajaw. Following three years of intensive digital analysis—including 3D photogrammetry and virtual architectural modeling—researchers were able to reconstruct a heavily damaged painting hidden within Structure II. The stunning reconstruction reveals Juun Ajaw engaged in a scene of aquatic hunting, situated within a chamber intentionally designed to mimic the interior of a sacred cave. In the Maya worldview, these cave-like spaces held immense cosmological power, serving as physical portals to mythological realms.

Beyond the striking imagery, the mural contains a crucial detail that is reshaping our understanding of early Maya civilization: a symbol likely representing a marker in the 260-day Tzolk’in ritual calendar. This fascinating addition suggests that even during the Preclassic period, the ancient Maya were already successfully embedding their mythological narratives into both physical architecture and specific ceremonial timeframes.
