Maize god sculpture unearthed in Tlaxcala

A stone sculpture believed to depict a maize deity has been recovered in San Damián Texoloc, Tlaxcala, and is now under examination by specialists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
The object dates to AD 600–900, placing it in the Epiclassic period, and is associated with the Olmec-Xicalanca culture. It came to light during excavation works on private property, where it had remained buried until it was discovered a few months ago.
Carved from basalt, the piece represents a human head. It stands about 29 centimeters high and weighs roughly 30 kilograms. The figure shows an elongated skull, a broad nose, full lips, and almond-shaped eyes—features that researchers link to populations from the Gulf Coast region in pre-Hispanic times…Click here to read full article.
